Slush: A Grand Stage for Startups, Insights, and Preparation

For years, I had heard about Slush—the world-renowned startup event in Helsinki, Finland. Known for its scale, energy, and impact, it had been on my radar, yet I had never taken the step to experience it firsthand. That changed in 2024 when my trusted partners at RedBrick Accelerator provided me with the opportunity to join Slush. It was an experience that was as insightful as it was eye-opening, a stark contrast to the more intimate Baltic startup gatherings I have been accustomed to.

The Sheer Scale of Slush

Having attended numerous startup events across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, I have grown to appreciate the balance of accessibility and quality networking that the Baltic ecosystem offers. In contrast, Finnish events—especially when they scale beyond their smaller origins—take on an entirely different dynamic. Slush is no exception. It is a massive, high-energy, high-stakes gathering where thousands of founders, investors, and ecosystem players converge.

Unlike the cozy networking of TechChill in Riga or the strategic matchmaking of sTARTUp Day in Tartu, Slush operates at a grander level. Without prior preparation, navigating an event of this magnitude can be overwhelming. Pre-arranged meetings are not just helpful; they are essential. Without them, it’s easy to get lost in the sheer volume of attendees, where every investor and founder has their agenda planned down to the minute.

Making the Most of the Experience

Due to the last-minute nature of my trip, my preparation was not as thorough as I would have liked. I quickly realized that without a structured schedule of pre-booked meetings, the best way to extract value from Slush was to focus on two key areas: engaging with exhibitors and absorbing insights from keynote speakers.

Spending time in the exhibition area turned out to be a goldmine of spontaneous conversations. Many startups showcasing their solutions were eager to share their ideas, and I was able to exchange valuable insights. Additionally, I received significant feedback on one of my own startup ideas—direct, unfiltered, and from people who genuinely understand the space.

The keynote sessions were another highlight. Slush attracts some of the most influential voices in the startup world, and the content is highly relevant. By focusing on the speakers who aligned with my areas of interest, I was able to walk away with new perspectives, deep insights, and an even clearer direction for my ongoing projects.

Preparation: The Key to Unlocking Slush’s Full Potential

Despite my successful experience, one thing became crystal clear: Slush demands meticulous preparation. Unlike Baltic events, where networking happens more organically and even last-minute spontaneity can lead to meaningful connections, Slush operates differently. If you want to maximize your time, you need to secure meetings well in advance, set a clear agenda, and be deliberate about your objectives.

For those considering Slush for the first time, my advice is simple—plan ahead. Without pre-arranged meetings, your time will likely be spent passively consuming content rather than actively engaging in deal-making and meaningful conversations. But when approached with the right strategy, Slush offers an unparalleled platform for meeting the right people, exploring cutting-edge ideas, and accelerating the trajectory of any startup venture.

A Successful First Experience with More to Come

While my first visit to Slush was not as structured as I would have ideally wanted, it was far from a wasted trip. I gained clarity, insights, and valuable feedback that will help shape my next steps. And now that I have experienced it firsthand, I will be returning—with a plan, with meetings scheduled in advance, and with a sharper strategy to unlock its full potential.

Slush is not just another startup event; it’s a global stage where those who come prepared can make transformative connections. And next time, I’ll be ready.
